Sheep Camp is next to the store and is dedicated to the people of the Ramah Navajo Community. Their culture and skill raising and caring for sheep is integral to their way of life. As we were building our store, our friend, Chimeco Eriacho, shared the story of how our land had once been a local rodeo ground where his father was often a champion of the Chicken Pull event (while on horseback!). Foot races, horse races and Indian rodeo were also a part of the fun. Chimeco pointed out cedar posts that Remained from corrals and lambing sheds.

He also told us that when he was a boy he would ride his horse 5 miles from his home, over the mesa, to buy a penny candy from the “Bond Trading Post" that was located across the road from where our store now stands, then ride the 5 miles back before dark. We cherish the friendship we had with Chimeco and his generosity of storytelling.

Yucca Cabin

Yucca Cabin

The "Yucca Cabin" is named for New Mexico's State flower.

Southwestern Native Americans used Yucca plant root to create a soapy lather to clean clothes, hair and themselves. The leaves were also soaked and pounded with stones to separate out long fibers which were used to make cordage for belts, ropes, sandals, fishing nets, baskets, hoops, prayer sticks, paints and dyes. The fruit, root, and flowers were eaten raw and dried for winter.

Hi Jolly Cabin

Hi Jolly3

The "Hi Jolly" cabin commemorates the encounter of the U.S Army Camel Corp with El Morro and Inscription Rock in 1857 under the leadership of Lieutenant Edward F. Beale, U.S. Army. The head Camel handler and trainer was a man named Hadji Ali who became known to his English speaking companions as "Hi Jolly". The expedition camped at El Morro, watered their horses and camels, and left their names on Inscription Rock as evidence of their passing.

Hi Jolly

"August 24th. Monday. Last night a tremendous dew fell, saturating the blankets of those who slept out. We again visited Inscription Rock this morning and entered the corral on horseback. It is a beautiful place, secluded and secure, fit for the echo of words of love. Here one might pour out all the tender ideas of love without reserve, without interruption. It was a romantic spot and one we shall all remember, when years have passed, and other scenes will have grown dim in the waters of memory. We parted from the place with regret, after having inscribed on the rock’s soft face our names."

- From the journal of May Humphreys Stacey Supplemented by the report of Edward Fitzgerald Beale. 1857-1858
